Use a scraper or some sandpaper and a dry paint brush to remove all dust and debris.

Hairline cracks can be sanded. WARNING: large cracks need to be repaired. Follow the exterior patching compound's manufacturer instructions. Let dry thoroughly and feather the edges smooth with sandpaper.

Caulking Windows and Doors

Remove all old caulk with a scraper.

Make sure the surface is clean and dry. Using only exterior grade, paintable caulk, seal the edges around window casements, door frames, corners and trim—anywhere water could possibly enter your home.

TIP

Practice using a caulk gun first on a test board. Lay down a uniform bead by pulling the caulk gun backwards.
