Interior Decorative Painting Tips

Metals and Patinas

Create the look of metals with metal and patina glaze over a base coat with brush and roller. For patinas, or the look of rust, use a sponge to apply multiple glaze colors. For a simple transformation or quick update, this technique is easy to paint over. No sanding or stripping of the underlying faux finish is needed. Just apply a topcoat and you're done.

Metals Paint Technique

Step 1. Tape off all areas where you do not want to apply this finish. Using a roller, apply Valspar base coat to entire surface. Remove tape and allow to dry overnight.

Step 2. Reapply tape. Apply metallic glaze with a premium quality paintbrush or roller. Work in 4-6 foot wide sections.

Step 3. Using a wallpaper smoothing brush, work through the wet glaze in a series of large overlapping arcs. This sweeping motion will allow the base color to show through the glaze in certain areas, creating the look of brushed metal. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until entire wall is complete. Remove tape and allow to dry overnight. After first coat has dried, you may add a second coat for a richer metallic look.

Patinas Paint Technique

Step 1. Tape off all areas where you do not want to apply this finish. Using a roller, apply Valspar base coat to entire surface. Remove tape and allow to dry overnight.

Step 2. Reapply tape. Wet a natural sea sponge in water and wring out well. Dab the sponge into the glaze, loading the sponge evenly. Randomly apply the glaze, concentrating some areas with more color. Let dry.

Step 3. Sparingly apply a second glaze if desired with a damp sponge. For a more natural Patina effect, reapply any of the earlier glazes or base colors, using a damp sponge. Use a brush, or experiment with other tools such as cheesecloth, sponges or coarse brushes. Remove tape and allow to dry overnight.

Rust or Steel Rust Paint Technique

Step 1. Tape off all areas where you do not want to apply this finish. Using a roller, apply Valspar base coat to entire surface. Remove tape and allow to dry overnight.

Step 2. Reapply tape. Dip a wad of cheesecloth into the Pewter Glaze. Randomly dab the glaze across the surface. A diagonal drifting of pattern looks more natural than vertical or horizontal rows. Keep in mind the Pewter Glaze has a faster drying time than typical glazes.

Step 3. Dab a damp natural sea sponge into the next glaze, loading the sponge evenly. Lightly pounce the surface with the sponge, concentrating the color in areas around the Pewter Glaze. To reach into tight spaces and corners, use a small natural sea sponge. Remove tape and allow to dry overnight.

Tips for Success

Choose from our pre-mixed colors or have your glaze color custom-tinted at the paint counter.

Try your technique on a practice board before you try it on the walls.

For a longer open working time use Valspar Interior Semi-Gloss Enamel as a base coat. This will extend the workability of the glaze and will also result in a higher overall sheen level of the faux finish.

For a simple transformation or quick update, this technique is easy to paint over. No sanding or stripping of the underlying faux finish is needed. Just apply a topcoat of paint and you're done!
