Interior Decorative Painting Tips

Crackle Effects

With Crackle, you decide the size of the cracks, from small cracks like porcelain, to the larger weathered crackle, by your application technique.

Porcelain Crackle Paint Technique

Step 1. Tape off all areas where you do not want the finish applied. Apply Valspar base coat with a roller to entire surface. Remove tape. Allow to dry overnight.

Step 2. Reapply tape. Using a foam brush, apply an even coat of Porcelain Crackle to the surface in a small X pattern, overlapping the X's to cover the surface.

Step 3. After covering the area, reload foam brush and even out the glaze by lightly running the brush over the surface. Work the brush both horizontally and vertically adding more glaze if necessary to keep an even coat. The final smoothing should be done vertically (on a wall) or with the grain of the wood. Do not overwork the Crackle Glaze. Remove tape within an hour and allow to dry completely.

Step 4. Once the Crackle Glaze has dried (at least 24 hours), apply Antiquing Glaze or Translucent Color Glaze to the surface with a dry rag or brush. Remove excess glaze with a clean rag before it dries. For extra protection, apply a coat of Clear Protector.

Weathered Crackle Paint Technique

Step 1. Tape off all areas where you do not want the finish applied. Apply Valspar base coat with a roller to entire surface. Remove tape and allow to dry overnight.

Step 2. Reapply tape. Using a premium quality nylon brush or short 1/4" nap roller, apply an even coat of Weathered Crackle Glaze to the surface. Do not overwork the Crackle Glaze. Remove tape and allow to dry 2 to 4 hours before applying top coat.

Step 3. Reapply tape. Using a roller or brush, apply a top coat of Interior Flat paint. (Note: You must use a flat sheen for this technique to work. The use of any other sheen will not produce the crackle effect.) One application in a single direction works best. Do not overwork the top coat as this may cause the paint to gum up. Within minutes the top coat will begin to crack, letting the base coat show through. If you want a more pronounced effect, we suggest using a brush. For a finely cracked, delicate look, use a roller. Remove tape within an hour and allow to dry.

Step 4. (Optional) To further distress dried Weathered Crackle and emulate an even more worn finish, try rubbing off edges or sanding through the dried latex top coat.

Step 5. After the crackle has dried at least 72 hours, apply Clear Protector to protect the surface.
